The New Year is off
and running! There is much going on in our
church community. February is full of
special events in our community, for
our community! I hope that you will read
this issue of the Common Ground with your heart
open along with you calendar, and mark down the
dates of events you will plan to join in.
A most important event in this month is the
beginning of the Season of Lent. It begins
on the Wednesday after Valentine's Sunday, on
February 17th. We will be
having a traditional Service of Ashes in our
Chapel at 7:00 pm.
Lent is a 40 day season
of fasting and observance where we fix our
attentions on the Sacrifice of Christ. It
leads us to the special services of Passion Week
that begin on Palm Sunday. On Valentine's
Sunday, I will be concluding the "Big God" series
and we will be focusing on the "Big Love" God
desires to pour out into and through our lives.
During the Sundays of Lent, our Pastors will be
challenging us to a deeper appreciation of the work
of God's Love as they ask the big six questions of
exploration and understanding; Who, What, When,
Where, Why and How?
Lenten Disciplines for
many believers means the giving up of something;
alcohol, chocolate, red meat on Fridays, but it
could also include more contemporary 'fasting' from
things like television, movies, or any component of
life that could use a new perspective. Some
Christians prefer to add something to their life
during the season of Lent; special daily devotional,
additional service, perhaps reconciling a broken
friendship. There are handouts available in
the parlor and at the back of the Sanctuary that may
give you some new ideas for your personal Lenten
Discipline. Or you may chose to commit to our
reading our daily e-devotionals written for our
church community by our Pastors and Church Leaders
(see elsewhere in this issue for more details).
I am excited about how
God is strengthening our church family and am
confident that there are amazing things in store for
each one of you as you go deeper into the great Love
of God!

Join with your
Church Family for a special Lenten
Discipline!
Your Pastors
will be sending out daily e-devotionals
during the Season of Lent. If you are
looking for something to 'add' to your life,
you might consider the 5 minute commitment
to read these daily offerings of inspiration
for your spiritual journey! Pastor
Marianne has committed to 'Mondays with
Mundee' Pastor Viv will be offering thought
each Saturday. Pastor Douglas and
perhaps other church leaders will be sharing
reflections on other days. These will
not
be mass e-mailed to everyone on the Common
Ground mailing list!!! If you choose
to join your church family for this
convenient yet community building
practice---you
must fill out the Lenten Daily
E-devotional sign up card. Your act of
commitment can then be placed in the
offering plate, in the prayer box off of the
parlor, or send your e-mail to
admin@whiterockchurch.org
subject line; e-devotional. The
sign-up card has space for more than one
e-mail if you prefer to get it delivered to
more than one address.
Make a space
in your life to journey into God's word each
day with your White Rock Family!

Our Mission is pointing people
to Jesus...through serving...
Early in 2007, our Missions
Ministry began working with this
organization to provide monthly
food boxes. This
partnership has proven a
wonderful opportunity to not
only provide outreach to our
community by caring for families
with identified need, but it has
helped us care for members of
our own church family during
challenging times. Because
of the volume buying power of
this international organization,
each food box purchased at $30;
provides food valued at between
$65 and $80 of retail cost.
Our current year of ongoing
monthly support totals only
$100.00 of the monthly $600.00
expense we have been providing.
In order to meet our current
level of support of 20 boxes
each month, the Missions
Committee is in need of funding
partners who can help continue
this work!
Monthly check and cash
envelope offerings are
opportunities for you to join
with us in this ministry.
You may also choose to sponsor
several boxes each month,
sponsor a single box, or sponsor
half of a box at $15.00 per
month. Any support
helps sustain this outreach to
feed those who have little.
You may use the contribution
cards in the pew backs to make a
one time credit or debit card
offering, or you may set up
regular monthly donations by
marking your card 'monthly
offering' and including it in
the offering baskets on any
Sunday morning. For more
details please contact Missions

Over 50 people attended the church
Family Potluck and were blessed by
the creative and inspiring work of
the "Willing Hearts" drama ministry.
It was an uplifting evening of
fellowship, great food, and a great
diversity of musical and dramatic
presentations. We give thanks
to God for the Cast and Crew who put
in many hours of dedicated work to
bless our church community! If
you missed it---YOU MISSED IT!!!
Please plan on joining the Willing
Hearts' next presentation; A Dinner
Theater experience during
Saturday of Holy Week, April 3,
2010.

Our
Facilities and Grounds committee
continues to work hard to help us be
good stewards of the buildings God
has blessed us with! They also
oversee security on Sundays during
worship. A few informational notes
that will be helpful for you to keep
in mind.
~ Mo st
of our aging doors swell with the
weather, or are too heavy for
automatic closure devices to pull
completely shut. If you
exit through a door, it is important
that you pull the door behind you
and make sure it latches.
(Ask Pastor Douglas about the
homeless people who slept in our
basement and you'll understand why
this is vital!)
~
Please be responsible to tidy up
after yourselves! There
are trash cans everywhere for
your convenience...if you have a
spill; you can always find
clean-up supplies in the
kitchen.
~ For your safety (and the
safety of our children)
during Sunday Morning
Worship, at the start of
service, all doors to the
buildings are locked except
the main doors of the
Sanctuary facing Garland
Road. If you need to
access the restroom
facilities off the parlor
during worship, please
minimize distractions by
using the side aisle along
the organ side.
Handles have been added to
these double doors so you
can re-enter using the same
aisle.
Thank you for helping us
honor what has been
entrusted to us, and keeping
your awareness up so we all
remain safe and secure!

Invites You to Join Us
February 14th
for a
Valentine's Day Brunch
(Immediately
following the service)
Here's the
deal: We all need
somewhere to eat after church,
right? The Friends Board
and Volunteers will be working
to prepare a convenient brunch
buffet to help us celebrate our
church family. All we are
asking is that you donate what
you would normally spend for
that meal elsewhere to continue
the work of this outreach
ministry. If you are new
to our church, there will be
people available to 'tour' you
through our General Store and
show you the valuable
